Low Carb Life: Bellyrina Tries The Keto Diet!
Hey there, FitFam! My apologies for having been missing these last few weeks. It has been a crazy time, and the man has been down with the flu, so writing took a bit of a back seat. But I’m back, and have I got news for you. I’m trying out the Keto diet!
Now as some of you may know, I (as far as possible) try things out myself before I recommend them to you, and this includes workouts. Each TGF workout you receive has been tried & tested, and sometimes modified to prevent injury or excess strain. But ever since TwitterGetsFitter got started, I’ve received tonnes of messages asking me my opinion on various diets. As someone who never really followed a “diet”, I never really offered much of an opinion on these, because I’m no expert. But given the number of people interested in Keto, and the number of people whom I have seen achieve great results from it, I decided to give it a try myself.
For those who don’t know what the Keto diet is, let me give you a brief idea — It’s a Low Carb, High Fat (LCHF) diet, meaning it advocates eating very low quantities of carbohydrates, and higher quantities of (healthy) fats. Following this diet is said to cause your body to deplete its stored glycogens (what happens to carbs in your liver), and then start burning fat for fuel. Staying on this nutrition plan effectively trains your body to burn fat instead of carbohydrates, which results in rapid and dramatic fat-loss. I can vouch for the dramatic part, I know a guy who lost so much weight, I honest-to-goodness did not recognise him when I met him next!
To give you some examples of what I will and will not be eating on this diet, it’s goodbye to bread and rice and potatoes. My coffee will now be sans milk, but instead enriched with coconut milk and heavy cream. My freezer is also stuffed with chicken, which I shall be cooking in butter (yum!). Also plenty of spinach, eggs, and mushrooms. I’ll add more to this list as the days go by, so stay tuned.
From now until the end of November (about 6 weeks), I’m going to be on a strict Keto diet. So farewell to my beloved bread and my rice-so-nice-I-eat-it-twice, and hello to plenty of chicken, butter, and heavy cream in my coffee!
